Samsung looking to dumb-down the smartphone

One of the many great things about smartphones is that it doesn't take a genius to operate them: although different platforms have different learning curves, generally using a smartphone is pretty straight forward. If you want to change something about your phone you probably start searching under  "settings," you want to take a picture? There's an app for that.

It appears that Samsung, the leader (in sales) of Android smartphones is looking to lower the overall rate of the learning curve for all users in an upcoming software update that will turn the Galaxy S III into an easier to use phone.

The Update will bring many features for the Galaxy S III that have already been implemented into the Note II. For example, the startup guide that comes up when you first turn on a new SGS III will contain options for the visually impaired. It's great to see that Samsung realizes that not all smartphone users have the same abilities.

Also, a new camera mode will snap several shots and use facial recognition and some algorithms to analyse the faces of the subjects and edit the photo so that everyone looks their best, and by this we mean that everyone has their eyes open. Nifty.

Finally, another option that will come with the update is a simplifies UI that hides all of the advanced stuff, like graphics acceleration and debugging, and simply shows the more commonly used options like wifi and  brightness. Apparently, these will be displayed on the homescreen to allow for even easier access to those who are not tech-oriented or simply lazy.

Let's hope that we get more details from Samsung soon about more of the features that will be packed into this update.
