Facebook has been sued by Rembrandt Social Media over the Like button. It appears that Facebook was using patents by a dutch developer Joannes Jozef Everardus van Der Meerin who had used the said patents in his own social media community, Surfbook.
Late Joannes' patent owning foundation Rembrandt Social Media has sued Facebook for using the patent without any permission, and has been aware of the patent, as they've referred to Joannes' patents in their own applications for the same patent.

The foundation believes that Facebook's success is based on the patents belonging to them, and therefore have sued Facebook in Virginia, USA.
Joannes' own social community was a lot like Facebook, but it was online in 1998, five years before Facebook. In 2004, when Joannes died and the patent ownership was transferred to the foundation, Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook.
The Rembrandt Social Media have reason to believe that also Add This has used their patents without permission.
