Bad Piggies review
Rovio’s new game titled “Bad Piggies” offers users a form of back-story to the green pigs from “Angry Birds,” but is it anywhere near as fun as the hit game?
We all remember playing Angry Birds for the first time: the fun and frustration one encounters while trying to demolish the hundreds of pig hide-outs is what made Angry Birds so addictive for everyone. It was a clever and extremely simple game, and so far it appears as if Bad Piggies, Rovio’s newest puzzle game, is just as fun as its predecessor.
Graphics:
The overall feel of the game is very similar to that of the Angry Birds Series. The layout of the few buttons in the game is extremely similar to Angry Birds. In fact, it almost feels as if the menus and buttons from Angry Birds were reused in this new game.
This is great for the most part. As I mentioned, the game is really simple to use. The menus have a hierarchy that just makes sense, and it’s extremely easy to make ones way through the different menus to change settings, pause and turn of sounds, etc.
Where this might be slightly detrimental to the game is the fact that its much less exciting when you start playing the game: it simply feels like you’re opening up Angry Birds with a different skin.
To me this takes a bit of the excitement factor out of the game, since I feel like I have already played it and expect it to become bland very quickly. However, some users might find they like the familiar look, especially since the layout works so well.
The art of Angry Birds is, to me, where the game truly excelled. Angry Birds achieved a near-perfect balance of colour and graphics complexity. Bad Piggies, thankfully, shares this in common with Angry Birds: The game looks fun. The fact that the game looks so fun only makes it that much more attractive to users, who ultimately will “judge a book by its cover,” so to speak.
In addition, the stylized cartoon look of Bad Piggies is nearly flawless. The lines are sharp, colors contrast very well and the effects, though minimal, are present and add a nice touch to the game experience.
Graphically, this game is an absolute win.
5/5
Gameplay:
Angry Birds did not become as popular as it is today with just pretty graphics. Angry Birds was so fun it was addictive. Not only was it addictive to youngsters, everyone fell in love with those crazy birds. I remember seeing grownups just as obsessed with the game as little kids.
Gameplay consists of building vehicles out of various non-conventional materials, which include but are not limited to fans, boxes, green pigs, different types of wheels, and my personal favourite, soda bottles that are shaken and used as thrusters.
The Puzzles start out fairly easy and quickly become increasingly difficult, requiring players to be as creative as possible. Simply getting to the finish line isn’t enough for our little green friends. They challenge us by adding small obstacles like boxes of dynamite to destroy our vehicles, as well as challenges like time restrictions and additional objectives, which are usually in the form of little silver boxes that will earn you an extra star, if you manage to collect them, that is.
Despite these challenges, the game is not terribly challenging in the sense that players can earn all 3 stars one objective at a time. For example, you can simply beat the level by reaching the finish line the first time, then try the level again to beat the time limit, and finally try again, but this time trying to collect all of the silver boxes and complete the race.
Overall, the game is extremely fun. The level design is simple, and still it can be slightly challenging.
Is it completely addictive? Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, no, it is not. Like I said earlier, the game feels too much like the Angry Birds Series to be new and exciting. that isn’t to say that the game isn’t fun, it’s just that many players will likely feel like the game is too much like Angry Birds, which makes it slightly less fun.
Overall, this game is a success due to its fun and slightly challenging nature. The fact that this game focuses on building the contraptions rather than destroying them, as well as the fact that this game has added difficulty and replay value in the form of challenges outweighs the repetitive feel of the game. 5/5
Price:
One word: FREE
Yet again Rovio delivers another simple and fun game that many, many people will enjoy completely free of charge. This makes the game even better, after all, who doesn’t like free?
